Lookit, I saved the police station and the two buildings next to the police station. And all these houses would never here! So Id go up there and Id say, Ed, Adriana, what do you got? Well, we got some old fabric, out of date fabric. Give it to me! And Id take it. Up until a year ago, he was still cutting the lawn! Daller: Oh, yes. I open the door to the parlor. My mother and his wife never got along too well. Im joining the Air Force. So I went out and I joined the United States Air Force of course. So as long as I own it, I own it, theyll pay for it. His family was like aristocratic. And we had our barracks, of course, and having your barracks, the only thing you had was a big trunk where you kept all your clothes in. Burke: Oh, my nephew. Daller: No. Where were you stationed and what was it like? I woke up with a sweat. Daller: Mm-hmm! And then the Eric woke up, and I said, Well, I dont know. So they built it like an attic and it was called an attic but it was a whole complete story. Burke: Its never finished! Q: Was it Mario that suggested the life tenancy agreement? [laughs]. Daller: Then you got rid of thatbut those are the early days. Of course, when I bought the house, that was all weeds growing up among the bricks. And I always used to say, Wonder who lives there! and so forth and so on. Destroyed. Get out. Daller: Well, its just the fact that the South Shore has gotten very built-up. But some strange things did happen in the house. They cant build houses on it. And I saved quite a bit of money. It has to stay exactly as an old plantation house. I did everything. So I went out and I said toI had two roommates, and I said to my roommates, Wheres my box? And they said Oh, well, Sergeant Joiner came in and took it. I said, Oh, no! I went running out. She said, If youre interested in buying it, I will make the arrangements that you can own it. He was from Central America somewhere, and he just believed in everything had to be right. So what I did, I decided, well, Id go inand we had where you could buy all your liquor and such in the post exchange. And that makes more sense to people when they see something. It doesnt happen on the North Shore because were very condensed and its a dense population. And my brother Bill and my brother Ed decided to go into an automobile repair shop. Burke: Well, a good example is the one right here at the end of the street. Burke: Yes. And then I decided Id get involved again with things that are going on. It makes sense because she was an old lady. Daller: But it was the thing with the lilacs smell. And there was nobody but my mother and I now, living in our house. I saved it years and years ago. She said, Now you can save it., And I said, Well, I can save it. I think I got the two of them for five bucks or something like that. Why cant they just appreciate something for what it is? And they repaired all these taxis, repainted them, and then sold them all to Cuba. And I had the money to do it, and I said, You know, let me do it.. Thats not good. The same thing thats going on with statues. The 84-year-old former interior designer has joint ownership of the Seguine Mansion with the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation, and he actually resides inside the historical. And I was the assistant to the general who was the surgeon for the European Command. But the one that I remember was a great big brooch. Come here, Marge. I said, What? They said, Sell this goddamn place. In my early twenties? I said, Where are you? She said, Well, I moved out years ago and went back to Georgia. She was great because she would know. Then I got shipped to Europe. He was pastor of Holy Child for 12 years until his retirement in 2000. And, oh, nobefore then, when I had moved in, I had moved in, and the house had been empty for years. And, well, lets face it, they never had any hot water over there at all. She stated, George, I want you to save my house, and agreed to sell the house for a feasible sum in exchange for his promise to restore it. Burke: And Im leaving everything thats in the houseits staying. He was born in Bay County, FL on June 30, 1936, to the late Ernest and . And then I went through floor and room after room, and took almost five years to put the house in good shape, the way you could see it. Thats whats in this whole house, all the things you see. So whenever the big surgeons traveled, I always traveled with themtraveled all over Europe. I'll never tire of the house. He did so much work for you. And I did, I got in St. George wasnt it? Burke: Oh, God, I stood on the edge here and I watched what was going on over there. They couldnt handle it, the clientele that came in. So you really cant even try to say what does it feel like? And I said, Was that a dream? And that was inwhere the hell, what did they call that area where all the Eskimos lived? Take a walk. I said, No, no, Im gonna save this house. He said, Oh! And I invested in a couple of things. That was a great house. And you can ask[gesturing to Daller], Daller: Everybody got something. The Greek Revival house is one of the few surviving examples of 19th Century life on Staten Island. Because he paid for the entire outside himself. You know, everybody knew him, and everybody, wow. Of course, I went to school here. Hes the man that built the house. The Definitive Collective for all Southern Gothic. Yes. So I found this big beautiful, French, mansard roof, big Victorian house in Tottenville. In fact, I think it was just landmarked wasnt it? That was gorgeous. George had a wonderful career with the MBTA, starting as repairman and becoming the Superintendent of the Red Line until his retirement. Burke: Yes. When I bought it, I didnt know what was that ones house. Burke: Yes, there was a little man in New Jersey. I loved being there and everything. He says, Hes my good friend, and so on, We live on Staten Island. And I got to know a tremendous amount of people that way. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is a member of the Historic House Trust . And through all the years that the old lady had this woman taking care of her, the lilacs were always in bloomwhen they were in bloom, they were in the house. Burke: I think, what was left of it, the sons moved to California and they opened up a Scalamandr in California. Daller: Oh, I dont know. Probably. You could ask for their house and youd get it.
