While I believe, that tracing bases or making traced bases from official pieces of artwork can help you learn (much like how you learn to write by tracing letters in the beginning phase of the process), learning and using actual techniques, like breaking down your reference into simple shapes before recreating it using these shapes, does way more for you than tracing could in the long run, which is why I advise against tracing. You can add anything from wings to gills, scales, spikes, and many more terrifying options.
